This Review is a collaboration between HAICU, based at the University of Cape Town, and the CSA, based at the University of Pretoria. In 1990 women's rights activists in Uganda successfully lobbied to amend the Defilement Law, raising the age of sexual consent for adolescent females from fourteen to eighteen years old and increasing the maximum sentence to death by hanging. The amendment can be considered a macro-level intervention designed to address the social and health inequalities affecting young women and girls, particularly their disproportionately high rate of HIV as compared to their male counterparts. …
A meeting, Sex, Rights and the Law in a World with AIDS, was convened by several organizations to explore why the AIDS response has made relatively little progress on the prevention of sexually transmitted HIV, and what should be done to ensure a more effective long-term response. The meeting was organized for aids2031, a two-year initiative that is exploring what must be done now to change the face of AIDS in the year 2031, 50 years after the discovery of the first cases of AIDS. …
