UNESCO Builds Human Resource Capacity on Flood Management

Islamabad 2-4 May 2018: A three-day training workshop on "Flood Management through Flood Early Warning and Forecasting System" was jointly organized by UNESCO and Centre for Disaster Preparedness Management (CDPM). The workshop was part of UNESCO's "Strategic Strengthening of Flood Early Warning and Management Capacity of Pakistan-phase-II" Project which was launched in March 2015 in cooperation with the Government of Japan. Read more...

Press Freedom and trustworthy information keeps power in check and preserves democratic processes

Islamabad 3 May 2018: To mark the 2018 World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO Pakistan jointly with the European Union, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Embassy of Sweden organized the World Press Freedom Day celebration in Islamabad.

The event engaged 70 participants including university students, journalists and media workers, civil society organizations, government officials, UN counterparts and representatives of international community in a discussion on importance of a free and independent media. The main segment of the event were debates held on subthemes of online speech regulation and the role of social media in the times of elections. Read more...

Islamabad 1-2 May 2018: A two-day international workshop on "Collective Community Action for Eco-Watershed Mitigation to Floods and Drought" was jointly organized by UNESCO and Soil and Water Conservation Research Institute (SAWCRI), in Islamabad. Republic of Korea Gives Support to UNESCO's Programme for Girls' Education in Pakistan

The Republic of Korea has brought its support to UNESCO's Girls' Right to Education Programme in Pakistan with the signing of an agreement between UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and the country's Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Mr Lee Byong-hyun, on 23 March 2017 in Paris. Read more...

Pakistan launch of UNESCO's 'World Trends Report'

Lahore 27 February 2018: The second global edition of UNESCO's "World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development" was launched on 27 February at the University of the Punjab, Lahore.

The event "World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development: A Pakistani Perspective on UNESCO Report" was co-organized by the University's Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) and by the Journalism and Media International Center (JMIC) at the Oslo Metropolitan University. Read more...

UNESCO signs landmark USD 2.8 million project with the Government of Punjab

A project has been signed by UNESCO and the Government of Punjab on the 19th of February, 2018 at Wazir Khan Mosque. With the financial support of the World Bank, under the Punjab Tourism for Economic Growth Project (PTEGP), UNESCO has signed the component of the "Protection and Promotion of Cultural Heritage of Punjab for Sustainable Tourism and Economic Growth". Read more...

UNESCO Pakistan launches the 2017/8 Global Education Monitoring Report

UNESCO Islamabad, in collaboration with I-SAPS (Institute of Social and Policy Sciences) launched the GEM Report 2017/8 - "Accountability in education: meeting our commitments". The national launching ceremony held on 16 November 2017 which was followed by the global launch on 24 Oct 2017 in Mozambique. Ms. Vibeke Jensen, UNESCO Representative to Pakistan and Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman, Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training officially launched the report. Read more...

UN Day celebration at Fatima Jinnah Women University Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi 24 October 2017: A group of female ambassadors, heads of cooperation agencies and heads of UN agencies working in Pakistan joined hands with Fatima Jinnah Women University to mark the UN day. More than 100 students from different departments of the university got a chance to interact with the speakers in small groups, listen to their career experiences, ask questions and be inspired. Students from each group reiterated challenges are everywhere, but women can do whatever they want to do, they need commitment and strong will to continue towards their goal and importantly women need to support each other to overcome shared challenges and move forward. Read more...

Truck Art - An Instrument of Advocacy

 
Pakistani "truck art" has become a global phenomenon, inspiring gallery exhibitions abroad and prompting art and craft vendors to sell flamboyant miniature pieces. For the truck drivers, the designs that turn decades-old vehicles into moving murals are often about local pride. Picking the right color or animal portrait is tougher than the countless hours spent on the road. One of the truck artist in Rawalpindi said, "The people of Malakand, South Waziristan and Kashmir region like portraits of mountains and different wild animals like eagle and lion and they are in a big demand". Read more...

UNESCO and partners celebrate the International Day for Universal Access to Information

Islamabad, 28 September 2017: Democratic rights, freedom of expression, and the right of access to information: these were some of the key cross-cutting issues discussed during the International Day for
Universal Access to Information. With participation from various stakeholders, the event employed a holistic approach to further the debate on access to information between government officials, civil society members, students, journalists, and members of the international community. 100,000 out of school children in Pakistan the target of UNESCO-Education Above All Foundation initiative

Islamabad, 21 September 2017: The Education Above All Foundation (EAA), through its programme Educate A Child (EAC), and UNESCO have partnered on a programme to benefit 100,000 out-of-school children in Pakistan.

Through our partnership with EAA Foundation, the project will support the expansion of UNESCO's on-going cooperation with the Government of Pakistan on girlss education and focus on 14 remote districts with low primary school enrolment rates. Through advocacy and school improvement interventions, the project will work closely with parents, teachers and communities to enrol children, prevent dropout and improve learning. Read more...

UNESCO signed an agreement with Italian Government to support girls' right to education and safeguarding of cultural heritage through education in Pakistan

 
Islamabad, Thursday 7 September 2017: UNESCO Islamabad and the Government of Italy signed an agreement of approximately USD 1.7 million for a two-year project titled "Support to girls' right to education and safeguarding cultural heritage through education in Pakistan". H.E Stefano Pontecorvo, the Italian ambassador to Pakistan and Ms. Vibeke Jensen, UNESCO Director/ Representative signed the agreement in the presence of Mohammad Baligh-ur-Rehman, the Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training and Syed Junaid Akhlaq, the Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and Natural Heritage. Senior government officials, UN Officials and media representatives also marked the ceremony with their presence. Read more...
