The program seeks to complete the Management and Conservation Plan for the Island of Mozambique for the period of 2018-2022, which brings together various key stakeholders and partners at multiple levels. It addresses issues related to disaster preparedness, climate change resilience and population increase to improve the management, conservation and socio-economic development of the Island of Mozambique as a city and a world heritage site.
The Government of Mozambique has committed to reverse the increasing degradation of the built heritage and to improve the living conditions of inhabitants in Island of Mozambique. Following the Management and Conservation Plan (2010-2014), in May 2016, the World Heritage Committee Decision 40 COM 7B.15 requested the State Party (Mozambique) to evaluate and update it. With support from UNDP and national and local government authorities, UNESCO launched a programme for completing the Management and Conservation Plan (2018-2022). This process is funded by the One UN Fund Mozambique with involvement of UNDP and UN Habitat, and will bel part of the celebrations marking the 200 Years of Mozambique Island as a city.
Expected Results:
- Document natural and cultural resources not included in the current Conservation and Management Plan
- Improve the understanding of the HUL approach and build capacity and awareness of local, national and international technical and financial partners;
- Raise awareness of local communities’ responsibilities and identify opportunities for their meaningful involvement in the conservation and sustainable development of the Island;
- Contribute to ensuring implementation of Decision 40 COM 7B.15 (May 2016).
