South-south Cooperation on Ecohydrology and IWRM strengthened through Signing of MoU between UNESCO water-related Category 2 Centres

Signing of MoU between two UNESCO Category 2 Centres: APCE and RC-IRBM, witnessed by UNESCO Office Jakarta, HTC-KL, and REDAC USM

A Memorandum of Understanding for strengthened collaboration on ecohydrology and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) was signed between the Executive Director of Asia Pacific Centre for Ecohydrology (APCE) and the Director of Regional Centre for Integrated River Basin Management (RC-IRBM) Nigeria, both UNESCO Category 2 Centres, and witnessed by UNESCO Office Jakarta, Humid Tropics Centre Kuala Lumpur (HTC-KL), and REDAC USM.

The MoU was signed on 28 November 2017 during the Pathway towards Improved Water Education Curricula workshop in Penang, Malaysia, participated by a total of 34 participants (15 female participants) from Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Portugal, and Timor Leste, comprising of UNESCO category 2 water-related centres, IHP Committees, universities and other water stakeholders. The workshop was financially assisted by the Malaysia Funds-in-Trust

The areas of cooperation covered in the MoU include: exchange of staff, hosting as departmental visitors, exchange of relevant publications, exploring opportunities for collaboration and partnership on research programmes, exchange of other relevant information, and inviting the other party for relevant conferences. Funding for the areas of cooperation agreed in the MoU will be borne by the relevant participating party.  The MoU commenced immediately and last for five years.

UNESCO Office Jakarta would like to encourage other UNESCO Category 2 water-related Centres and Chairs to follow APCE and RC-IRBM footsteps in strengthening and implementing South-South cooperation. Throughout the work of UNESCO Office Jakarta and the Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, it has been clearly identified in previous water-related meetings and workshops that South-South cooperation as a key to water resources management in Asia and the Pacific as well as Africa, which would bring mutual benefits by strengthening own capacity as the results, and would contribute to the broader objectives of international development cooperation.
