Another year of supporting our future heritage leaders
The National Trust for Canada is now accepting applications for the Herb Stovel Scholarship Fund. Students studying built heritage and young professionals working in the field are invited to apply by May 27, 2016 for project bursaries or National Trust Conference attendance in 2016 or 2017. Types of Support:
- Project bursaries up to $2,500 for candidates who propose special projects, results-oriented travel and participation at conferences and events that continue Herb Stovel’s passion for community innovation and/or international dialogue in conservation theory and practice. Applications requesting support that is focused only on general tuition expenses will not be considered.
- National Trust Conference bursaries to cover the cost of travel, conference accommodations and registration (approximate value of $1,000) for candidates to attend the National Trust’s annual conference (Hamilton, ON, Oct 20-22, 2016; or Ottawa, ON, Oct. 11-14, 2017).
Who Can Apply?
The Fund was established to support one or more Canadian students or young professionals between the ages of 20 and 35, pursuing post-secondary or graduate studies in built heritage conservation, or working in the field of built heritage conservation. With assistance from the Fund, Herb Stovel Scholars will deepen their capacity in heritage conservation through special projects, experiential learning and conference attendance. Successful candidates will be announced in June 2016. The Herb Stovel Scholarship Fund is administered by the National Trust in cooperation with a professional advisory committee.
About Herb Stovel
All who knew Herb Stovel understood his commitment to heritage conservation and, more importantly, his strong support for education. Over a period of decades, he generously passed on his insight and knowledge, which have helped define both the theory and practice of heritage conservation in Canada and internationally.
In Canada, he taught as a professor at l'Université de Montréal and Carleton University. He also developed courses for the National Trust for Canada’s Main Street® program, which prepared professionals in communities across the country for careers in downtown revitalization. It is no exaggeration that Herb Stovel had students and followers in every corner of the globe. He believed in people and brought them together in the name of heritage conservation.
Herb’s commitment to education lives on through the Herb Stovel Scholarship Fund.
