2011-2020: United Nations Decade on Biodiversity

The General Assembly declared the period 2011-2020 as United Nations Decade on Biodiversity to promote the implementation of a strategic plan on biodiversity and its overall vision of living in harmony with nature.

The main goal is to mainstream biodiversity at different levels. Throughout the Decade, governments are encouraged to develop, implement and communicate the results of national strategies for implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity.

The decision was made through the General Assembly resolution A/RES/65/161 (.pdf) and the Decade was launched on the International Day for Biological Diversity 2011. It is being implemented by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
