Resistance, identity and ancestry: the 10 competitors awarded in the Contest: “African Descent Communities”

“Resistance” may be the word that comes to mind after watching the 10 winners videos of the Contest of Short-films “African Descent Communities: Acknowledgment, Justice and Development”. Resistance in many senses, including the refusal of submission to the desire of others; the struggle that remains as an action of self-defense; the reaction to an oppressive force; the qualities of those who show firm attitudes and persistence; the force that repeals the effects of a destructive action. Or, as says the storyteller of one of the awarded videos: “To resist is to work day after day for the confirmation of our identity”.

The contest was launched in November 2017 by IberCultura Viva Programme with the collaboration of the UNESCO in Brazil, as one of the actions promoted by the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024), declared by the United Nations in 2015, with the theme “People of African descent: recognition, justice and development”.
