UNESCO and education “everyone has the right to education”

A quality education throughout life is the birthright of every woman, man and child. In turn, education, particularly that of girls and women, aids progress across all development goals.

Today, UNESCO is committed to a holistic and humanistic vision of quality education worldwide, the realization of everyone’s right to education, and the belief that education plays a fundamental role in human, social and economic development.”

UNESCO New York Office is promoting the right to education through the negotiated documents of the General Assembly, ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as through events, exhibits and other programs.

Recent General Assembly resolutions related to the right to education include:

GA resolution (A/RES/70/209) on the “United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014)” insists on the crucial importance of an education of quality, equitable and inclusive all around the world in order to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The resolution also emphasizes the key role of UNESCO to achieve the education for Sustainable Development.

GA resolution (A/RES/70/137) on the Rights of the Child emphasizes the importance of the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Optional Protocols thereto, the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of the Child and non-discrimination against children and the Right to Education. The resolution also requests that Special Representative of The Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children and Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography continue to submit annual reports to the General Assembly and Human Rights Council “on the activities undertaken in the fulfilment of her mandate”.

GA resolution (A/RES/69/2) on education for democracy highlights the contribution of education in the reinforcement of democracy. It also calls the Secretary-General and UN agencies to promote peace, human rights, democracy and diversity through education. The resolution insists on the importance of educational activities in order to promote and consolidate democracy and democratic values.

GA resolution (A/RES/69/145) on World Youth Skills day expresses preoccupations on the high number of unemployed youth and point out the importance of the acquisition, by youth, of skills in order to enhance their abilities, “empower them to gain access to changing labor markets” and to be able to make more informed choices in their life. The 15th of July  is proclaimed as the World Youth Skills Day.
