The workshop aims to share the first experiences concerning the Sustainable Development Goal dedicated to water and sanitation (SDG 6) in french-speaking Central Africa. It will be devoted mainly to the reporting process of the SDG indicator 6.5.2 on transboundary cooperation in the field of water. The aim is therefore to obtain first feedback from the Member States and to prepare the next reporting exercise. br /br /This workshop is organized in cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Other thematic and sub-regional workshops will be organized by UNESCO and UNECE during the 2018-2019 biennium.br /
Target 6.5 of SDG 6 calls for countries to implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation, as appropriate. To measure progress on transboundary cooperation in accordance with target 6.5, indicator 6.5.2 was adopted. The indicator is defined as the "percentage of transboundary basin area with an operational arrangement for transboundary cooperation".br /br /As co-custodian agency, the International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO and UNECE has led the development of the step-by-step methodology to calculate indicator 6.5.2. During the first quarter 2017, the two agencies invited all countries having transboundary basins in their territory to track the progress on transboundary cooperation and to report on their national value of SDG indicator 6.5.2. A total of 107 out of 153 countries responded to the invitation and provided information on the indicator.br /br /To improve cooperation with and between Member States and to discuss the implementation of the reporting questionnaire, the methodology to be followed and the information-gathering process, a first workshop is organized with seven Member States of the french-speaking Central Africa for the next monitoring exercise planned for the end of 2019.br /br /Aspects related to the roles of UNESCO, its Yaounde Regional Office, UNECE, as well as the regional partners of this workshop (the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Global Water Partnership for Central African (GWP-CAF)) will be discussed during this sub-regional workshop to support the implementation of SDG6 in French-speaking Central Africa lasting for three days.br /br /Other thematic and subregional workshops will be organized during the biennium 2018-2019.
