District Education Officer Khagendra Subedi stated that out of a population of 763,470  the district has 117,402 literate people between the ages of 15 and 60, missing only 5650 people from that age group. Sunsari district has two sub metropolitan cities, four municipalities and six rural municipalities. Subedi appreciated the work of Community Learning Centres in conducting literacy classes through continuous learning programmes. He thanked UNESCO, Plan International and other organisations for their support towards this achievement.  

Experts have noted that, while this is a great achievement, there still remains a great challenge to maintain this literacy rate in the district, as the role of the local level government is changing. All agreed that there should be a strong coordination between the government entities and other non-government organisations to maintain this positive momentum and lead the district towards digital literacy. 

Prior to the declaration, pamphlets were distributed and rallies were organised from different Schools and Community Learning Centres.  Ministers, members of parliament, a spokesperson from Province No. 1, mayors and heads of all the local municipalities, a representative from UNESCO and other stakeholders were present at the ceremony. 

UNESCO supported the event under the project funded by Koica.

सुनसरी पूर्ण साक्षर जिल्ला घोषित 

साक्षरता दर ९५.५ प्रतिशत रहेको सुनसरी जिल्लालाई २७ फेब्रुअरी २०१८ मा पूर्ण साक्षर जिल्ला घोषित गरिएको छ । युनेस्को र प्लान इन्टरनेशनलको सहयोगमा जिल्ला शिक्षा कार्यालयद्वारा आयोजित एक कार्यक्रममा प्रदेश नं. १ का मुख्यमन्त्री माननीय शेरधन राईले उक्त घोषणा गर्नुभएको हो । माननीय राईले सुनसरी जिल्ला एवं समग्र प्रदेशमा नै शिक्षालाई पूर्णरुपमा सहयोग गर्ने प्रतिबद्धता जनाउनु भयो । देशभरीमा पूर्ण साक्षर घोषित हुने जिल्लाहरुमध्ये सुनसरी पैचालिसौं जिल्ला हो । 

जिल्ला शिक्षा अधिकारी खगेन्द्र सुवेदीले जिल्लाका ७,६३,४७० जनसंख्या मध्ये १५ देखि ६० वर्ष उमेरसमूहका १,१७,४०२ जना साक्षर भएको र यो समूहका जम्मा ५६५० जना साक्षर हुन बाँकी रहेको जानकारी दिनु भयो । सुनसरी जिल्लामा दुई उप—महानगरपालिका, चार नगरपालिका र छ वटा गाउँपालिकाहरु रहेका छन् । निरन्तर सिकाइ कार्यक्रमहरुका माध्यमबाट साक्षरता कार्यक्रमहरु सञ्चालन गर्ने गरेकोमा सुवेदीले सामुदायिक सिकाई केन्द्रहरुको कामको प्रशंसा गर्नुभयो । यो उपलब्धीका लागि सहयोग पुर्याएकोमा उहाँले युनेस्को, प्लान इन्टरनेशनल र अन्य संघसंस्थाहरुलाई धन्यवाद दिनुभयो । 

यो असाध्यै ठूलो उपलब्धी भएता पनि स्थानीय सरकारको भूमिका परिवर्तन भैरहेको सन्दर्भमा जिल्लामा यही साक्षरता दर कायम रही राख्न भने अझै पनि ठूलो चुनौति रहेको विज्ञहरुले औँल्याएका छन् । यो सकरात्मक उपलब्धीलाई जोगाइराख्न र जिल्लालाई प्रविधि–युग सापेक्ष साक्षरता तर्फ डोर्याउने काममा सरकारी निकायहरु र अन्य गैर–सरकारी संघसंस्थाहरुका बीच राम्रो समन्वय हुनुपर्नेमा सबैजना सहमत भएका छन् । 

घोषणा अघि पर्चाहरु वितरण गरिनुका साथै विभिन्न विद्यालय एवं सामुदायिक सिकाइ केन्द्रहरुबाट जुलुश निकालिएको थियो । मन्त्री, सांसद, १ नं. प्रदेशका सभामुख, स्थानीय मेयर एवं गाउँपालिकाहरुका प्रमुख, युनेस्कोका प्रतिनिधि लगायत अन्य सरोकारवालाहरु उक्त सभामा उपस्थित थिए । 

उक्त कार्यक्रमलाई युनेस्कोले कोइकाको आर्थिक सहयोगमा सञ्चालित परियोजना अन्तरगत सहयोग गरेको हो ।
