      Biosphere Reserve Information

Sudan

RADOM

General Description   Radom National Park was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1979. It is situated in southern Darfur close to the border to the Central African Republic, encompassing 1,250,970 hectares. Located in the Eastern Sahel, the area is characterized by savanna woodland with riverine forests. It is a broken hilly area mainly with altitudes about 450 meters above sea level and with two permanent rivers. The mountain range within the biosphere reserve constitutes a watershed dividing the Central African and Sudanese hydrographic system. Dominant tree species are Terminalia brownii Combretum spp., Anogeissus leiocarpus and Isoberlinia doka. Endangered woodland and plain mammalian species include the elephant (Loxodanta africana) and giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis).
About 16,000 people (including refugees) live within the biosphere reserve boundaries (2001). Major human land use activities include agriculture (sorghum, watermelon, sugar cane), honey collection, pastoralism and tree felling for trade and charcoal.
