On 30 November 2017, UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, is in New York to speak at the UN Security Council for the presentation of the first implementation report of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2347 on the protection of cultural heritage, which was prepared under UNESCO’s leadership. The Under Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, Vladimir Voronkov, will present the report to members of the UN Security Council during the public briefing on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Destruction and trafficking of cultural heritage by terrorist groups and in situations of armed conflict”.
UN Security Council Resolution 2347 was unanimously adopted in March 2017. It is the first Resolution to focus exclusively on the role of cultural heritage for peace and security, and it welcomes the central role played by UNESCO in protecting cultural heritage and promoting culture as an instrument to bring people together and foster dialogue. This first Report was prepared under the leadership of UNESCO in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, among others.
While in New York, the Director-General is expected to meet with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, the Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, and the Administrator of the United Nations Development Fund, Achim Steiner. She will highlight UNESCO’s contribution to the 2030 Agenda and the relevance of UNESCO’s programme in related UN coordinated development groups and initiatives.
