Monitoring and review

Without accurate data all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will remain just that – a set of goals. Data is crucial for countries to monitor progress and develop evidence-based policies. Global monitoring of progress is carried out through the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and the Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM).

Monitoring takes place through two types of indicators, 32 thematic indicators of which 11 are global. UIS assesses progress and provides information with maps and charts to illustrate national and regional data.

The GEM releases its report every year.  It is an invaluable global resource and advocacy tool.

Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data.

To ensure coordination in monitoring the data, UIS has convened a Technical Cooperation Group (TCG) composed of representatives from UNESCO, Member States, the Global Education 2030 Agenda partner agencies, civil society organizations and with the Inter-agency Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs).

UIS is also working with UNICEF and the World Bank to ensure standardised data and reporting on equity – a core commitment of the global agenda. It has also established a Global Alliance to Monitor Learning, which supports efforts by countries to measure learning outcomes.

Global Education Monitoring Report

The Global Education Monitoring Report is the mechanism for reporting on SDG 4
and other education-related SDG targets. It will also report on the implementation
of national, regional and global strategies to hold partners to account for their
   commitments

Overall review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Overall progress of the agenda is reviewed by the High-Level Political Forum
which meets every year under the auspices of the United National Economic
and Social Council (ECOSOC) and every four years under the United Nations
General Assembly (UNGA), in addition to review mechanisms through regional
         forums.
