UNESCO promotes literacy around the world through a range of initiatives, programmes and cross-sector projects, and supports Member States in the areas of policies, programme delivery and literacy assessments.

Cap-ED

  • Capacity Development for Education (CapED) is one of UNESCO’s main capacity development programmes for literacy. It assists Member States in reinforcing their education reforms including improving literacy levels for youth and adults; increasing the supply of qualified teachers; and widening access to Technical and Vocational Skills Education and Training (TVET) for youth, especially for girls and women.

UNESCO-Pearson Initiative for Literacy: Improved Livelihoods in a Digital World

  • This project is a collaboration between UNESCO and Pearson and explores new ways in which low-skilled and low-literate youth and adults can profit from inclusive digital technologies and strengthen their literacy levels and basic skills. Through case-studies, a trends analysis and guidelines, the project investigates and informs how digital solution providers, development partners and governments can create conditions for a greater inclusive use of technology.
