UNESCO Beirut: Seiko Sugita, s.sugita@unesco.org; UNDP Amman: Linda Haddad, linda.haddad@undp.orgUNESCO and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly organize a 2-day regional meeting that aims to review and collect experiences, good practices and lessons learnt of the first phase of the Shughel Shabab campaign and to plan the second phase (2018-2019).
Shughel Shabab is an advocacy media campaign designed and led by a group of committed Arab Youth peacebuilders and supported by UNESCO and UNDP to showcase the valuable role of youth in peacebuilding in the region. It was launched on the inter-agency portal “Youth4peace” on 21 September 2017 at the occasion of the celebration of International Peace Day.
As part of the inter-agency efforts in supporting the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on “Youth, Peace and Security”, the regional youth-led campaign has 3 key aims:
- To build space for young peacebuilders in the Middle East and North Africa.
- To provide a platform to give young peacebuilders a voice, and to promote more inclusive policies and peace processes that make room for young peacebuilders in the region.
- To change how youth from the Middle East and North Africa are rather negatively perceived in the media, and consequently by governments and society.
