Savithri (Savi) Narayanan

Dominion Hydrographer

Director General, Canadian Hydrographic Service, Department of Fisheries and Oceans

Dr. Savithri (Savi) Narayanan, Ph.D. from Harvard University in Applied Mathematics (Physical Oceanography), is the Dominion Hydrographer and Director General of the Canadian Hydrographic Service, and has been collaborating with IOC-UNESCO for over 15 years.

In addition to the hydrography programme in Canada, she is in charge of the Canadian National Oceanographic Data Center responsible for the coordination of the management of all scientific data in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, including the global data bases for the Global Temperature Salinity Programme of the IOC and the drifting buoy programme.

She is the chairman of the Arctic Ocean Science Board. She has been instrumental in the establishment of the Arctic Regional Hydrographic Commission, of the International Hydrographic Organization and chaired the Commission in its formative year.
