GNP+ and the World AIDS Campaign have developed key advocacy priority messages and a briefing paper by and for young people living with HIV to inform the UNGASS process. These priorities were formulated based on results from an online survey with 168 young people living with HIV from 55 countries, as well as a literature review and interviews with several key informants. The messages are available in English, French, Spanish and Russian.
The Good Policy and Practice Series addresses key themes in UNESCO’s work on HIV and AIDS in the Education sector. Booklet six, on Pre-service Teacher Training, is the latest installment and highlights the key role that pre-service training plays in preparing teachers for HIV prevention and sexuality education when they take up their posts in the classroom.
UNESCO participated in the Gender Exchange Meeting organized by the UNAIDS Regional Support Team, UN Women, and in close collaboration with Seven Sisters. The UNESCO Beijing office and the Beijing Normal University organized a Teacher Training workshop on 20-23 January 2011 in Beijing for teachers from three pilot universities including Beijing Normal University, Yunnan Normal University and Henan Normal University. The International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education is based on a rigorous review of evidence on sexuality education programmes and is aimed at education and health sector decision-makers and professionals.
Teacher management policies, tools and practices need to be reviewed and adapted to take into account the impact of HIV and AIDS on teachers. HIV related teacher management issues, such as workplace policies, access to treatment, retention, early retirement, redeployment of teachers needing care, training, and replacement of missing or absent teachers, need to be addressed.
