Camarão piticaia e camarão-branco no Estado do Maranhão: as cadeias de valor da pesca artesanal de camarão e caranguejo na Costa Amazônica do Brasil
This is the first volume of the series presented by the Sustainable Fisheries Project on the Amazon Coast (PeSCA), a partnership between Fundo Vale and UNESCO in cooperation with CSF-Brasil and Mitsui Bussan do Brasil Foundation. Its objective has been to promote and support the sustainable development of artisanal fishing value chains of various species of crab and shrimp in municipalities in the states of Maranhão, Amapá and Pará. This region of the Brazilian Amazon, rich in coastal and marine biodiversity, is home to the largest continuous stretch of mangroves on the planet and extends over 1,500 km.
The volume on the performance of the PeSCA Project in Maranhão identified the need to build and strengthen community networks for a more sustainable local development. These networks should be supported by a diversified product base that addresses and respond to the social, economic, environmental and cultural needs, so that it makes sense for the next generations as they are increasingly distanced from a way of life closely linked to natural cycles and from the knowledge linked to the local landscape.Among the problems encountered are the reduction of fishing resources - which sustain the local economy - due to a high rate of emigration from the communities, the reduction of fish in the wild, as well as the deforestation of the mangrove and the coastal ecosystem of transition between terrestrial and marine environments.
