This report describes the UNESCO regional seminar on HIV/AIDS and education within the school system for English-speaking countries in Eastern and Southern Africa held in February 1995. The seminar's objectives were: (a) To strengthen awareness among officials from ministries of education of the need for preventive education on HIV/AIDS and to inform them about effective preventive education strategies. (b) Develop and strengthen awareness of the nature of HIV/AIDS epidemic and of its impact on social and economic development, especially in the area of education; and (c) Encourage immediate, short-term actions and longer-term efforts designed to increase the effectiveness of preventive education programmers and to combat the actual and potential impact of HIV/AIDS on education systems.
