Culture and the 2030 Agenda

The 2030 Agenda, which was adopted in 2015, integrate for the first time culture in a development program and considers it explicitly as a factor of sustainable human development. Therefore, Culture is integral part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with several strategic entry points about, among others, heritage’s protection and promotion (SDG 11.4), education and culture (SDG 4.7), or local contents production (SDG 8.9 and SDG 11b).

UNESCO recognises that culture has a major impact on reducing poverty and contributes to a development, which is primarily human, inclusive and fair. Within the context of the operationalization of UNESCO Conventions for culture, joint programmes with other UN agencies and the close cooperation with national authorities, UNESCO’s work must play a key role in the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
