This paper discusses the limitations of conventional Information, Education and Communication (IEC) approaches to HIV prevention and describes Stepping Stones, one approach which 1) is more holistic in recognising the location of HIV in a broader sexual and reproductive health (SRH) context; 2) emphasises the importance of a gendered perspective throughout; and 3) works on the basis that, with good facilitation, ordinary community members are those most able to develop the best solutions for their own sexual health needs.
The aim of the study was to explore young people's understanding and knowledge about why protective measures against HIV/AIDS, malaria and unplanned pregnancy are not taken by those at risk in Uganda. The study results were that the participants (all from secondary school in Kanungu Uganda) could identify reasons why preventive action was not taken. These reasons included misconceptions, the inpracticability of abstinence, and fear of side effects of several key interventions. The article argues that there is an apportunity to improve preventive measures by tackling these issues. …
L'objectif principal de cette recherche est d'étudier et d'analyser l'adaptabilité et les impacts des campagnes ou stratégies de communication des séances d'information, d'éducation et de communication (IEC-VIH-SIDA) en milieu scolaire et/ou universitaire en rapport avec le contexte socioculturel béninois Dans cette optique, l'accent sera surtout mis sur la revue des différentes séances d'IEC en matière de VIH/SIDA effectuées en présentant les stratégies étudiées, les supports utilisés et les messages transmis et en procédant par la suite à une analyse des données recueillies.
La présente recherche réalisée au sein des universités de Ouagadougou, de Bobo-Dioulasso et de Koudougou, analyse les perceptions, les attitudes et les pratiques des universitaires face au VIH/Sida et leur réponse en matière de lutte contre ce phénomène.
De nos jours la pandémie du VIH/SIDA a atteint toutes les couches socioprofessionnelles. Ainsi, l'organisation des campagnes de sensibilisation et d'éducation devrait être un facteur important dans la prise de conscience des acteurs sociaux. Malheureusement les réalités du terrain sont en déphasage avec les politiques et programmes des associations des institutions et des ONG militant en faveur de l'éradication du mal. …
The aim of the workshop was to provide a follow-up forum for the BIG7 Alliance from the Nairobi cluster countries after the Pan-African Youth Forum in Dakar, Senegal, and to give them the opportunity to not only finalize their national action plans for HIV/AIDS prevention but also to identify regional needs and priorities that could be considered for prevention and mitigation of the impact of HIV/AIDS among young people in the region. This analysis looks at aáprocess evaluation of four channels of delivery (drama, video, community education and leaflets) used in an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) intervention on HIV/AIDS in rural Uganda. Semi-structured interviews (n=37) and focus groups (n=3) were conducted among field staff. Two questionnaires (n=105 and n=69) and focus groups were conducted with community members. More than 85% of the community had seen at least one drama or video and saw them as relevant and realistic. However, the overall message of the plays was often not well understood. …
This study compares the approaches of Taiwan and the Philippines in mitigating their HIV epidemics using non-formal educational programs. The Philippines has an HIV prevalence of 6,000-11,000 cases out of a population of 91 million. Their approach was to target female sex workers and their managers, before expanding to men in the community, and relying heavily on NGOs to provide sex education. Taiwan was a prevalence of 40,000 cases out of a 23 million person population. …
This prospective, 14-week cohort study sought to identify changes in HIV knowledge using a culturally-adapted, technology assisted educational approach in three rural Nigerian villages. One group of people were given seminar-based education, while another were given a portable, digial audio technology-based educational program, which drew on the rural culture of oral learning. The majority of the participants were Muslim (99%), male (53.3%) and lacked formal education (55%). HIV knowledge was improved by a larger degree in the technology facilitated group than the seminar-based group. …
This cross sectional study in the Solapur Municipal Corporation (Western Maharashtra) looked at 400 adolescent girls' knowledge on HIV/AIDS. Simple random sampling was used to identify the respondents. Data was gathered through interviews. When compared to a study conducted among adolescents in South Delhi and another among youth in Vadodara district, India (McManus & Dhar, 2008; Kotecha et al. 2011), a larger percentage of girls did not know how HIV is transmitted (54.25% versus 33% and 19.2% respectively). …
This manual is the outcome of a youth-led project by Restless Development Zambia (supported by Irish AID) to identify, document and highlight civil society anti-HIV and AIDS initiatives that have had proven awareness raising and programmatic impact in the education sector in Zambia. This article describes an evaluation of a school-based peer education intervention for HIV prevention among students in 27 high schools in Aden, Yemen. The intervention was developed after a survey among the same population in 2005, which revealed a high level of stigma toward people living with HIV (PLWH) and a low level of HIV knowledge. In a quasi-experimental design, students who received the peer education intervention (78.6%) were compared with students who did not receive the intervention (21.4%). No systematic procedure was applied in selecting students for the intervention condition. …

It highlights the important contribution of counsellors to HIV prevention, care, and support activities and forms one of three parts of the HIV Counselling Resource Package, which also includes trainer's session plans, participatory learning activities, and an HIV counsellor's toolkit.
