1. Opportunities for technology-based HIV prevention programming among high school students in Cape Town, South Africa

   One in three new cases of HIV in South Africa is among adolescents. Given that adolescents are particularly affected, scalable, and cost-effective prevention programs are urgently needed. This study aims to identify opportunities to integrate technology into youth HIV prevention efforts. In 2012, 1107 8th–11th graders completed a paper-and-pencil survey. Respondents were enrolled in one of three public high schools in Langa, a lower income community in Cape Town, South Africa. 2. HIV eLearning and classroom research study. Comparing the use of eLearning to traditional classroom learning to enhance HIV knowledge uptake in life orientation in primary schools in the Western Cape, South Africa and in Dublin, Ireland

   This study sought to provide evidence whether eLearning compared to classroom instruction improved HIV knowledge uptake among learners between ages 11 – 16 years. Based on the study’s findings, the supporting education departments are strongly advised to consider implementing eLearning as a technique to transfer HIV knowledge to adolescents using a culturally-adapted and interactive platform.

4. Access to conventional schoolong for children and young people affected by HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-national review of recent research evidence

   This paper examines the evidence on access to conventional schooling for children and young people affected by HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and makes recommendations for the further development of the SOFIE Project. The findings reveal the highly complex and context specific nature of the educational impact. In some areas broad adaptive capacities are emerging that may enable households to support a larger number of orphans whilst in other areas households are reaching the limits of their capacity to cope. …
