First Official Visit of the Director General to Paraguay

From 23 to 25 June, the General Director of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, is traveling to Paraguay for her first official visit to the country. The Director General is expected to meet with several high-level government representatives, including Hon. President Horacio Cartes Jara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Eladio Loizaga, the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Enrique Riera Escudero and the President of the Supreme Court, Ms. Alicia Pucheta Correa.

The Director will give a lecture on "UNESCO's response to the challenges of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development" at the National Congress of Paraguay. She will also attend a meeting with the Ministers of the Supreme Court on the progress made by the country in freedom of expression and security of journalists.

In a special meeting with the Paraguayan National Commission, the Director-General will discuss the advances of cooperation between Paraguay and UNESCO. On that occasion, the Director General will take part in the launch of the 3rd volume of “Docentes aprendiendo en red” (DAR) devoted to ways of living and expression of Paraguay’s women poets and writers.

While in Paraguay, Irina Bokova will visit the Itaipu binational dam, that has a rich scientific cooperation with UNESCO through the International Hydrological Programme. She will also visit the Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, registered in UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1993.
