This article focuses on the relationship between HIV/AIDS and education in countries with different levels of HIV/AIDS prevalence. It concentrates on the sector’s response to school issues, with some attention to teacher training colleges. The survey of experience has concentrated on sub-Saharan Africa, and on Asia and the Pacific, and the lessons that have been learned from high prevalence and low prevalence countries in those regions. This paper examines the relationship between education and HIV/AIDS with special reference to South Asia. The paper offers an overview of major regional trends in HIV/AIDS. It looks more closely at the links between education and HIV/AIDS as well as lessons learned. The focus here is on global experience to date, although local experience within South Asia is drawn upon where it has been documented. Finally, it considers the implications of HIV/AIDS for education and development within the region - both in relation to the attainment of EFA goals and challenges ahead.

It is eight fact sheets with information regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The documents states that SRHR are controversial and are contested by moral conservative, religious, cultural and political forces in many parts of the world. These limitations tend to lead to a lack of information that prevent people making free, informed and reasonable decisions regarding their own sexuality and reproduction.

This paper is one in a series of papers commissioned by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) in Bangkok for an expert consultation meeting in March 2004. It looks at the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on education from a human rights perspective. The paper also offers a conceptual framework to assess how HIV/AIDS has an impact on human rights and the education sector, and discusses directions for a future response.

The study described here explores, for three regions with generalized HIV and AIDS epidemics, the impact of the epidemic on teacher supply now and up to 2015, the target date for the achievement of education for all.
