    Connections is an adolescent and parent programme that helps girls and their mothers to become more confident and comfortable to talk about gender, relationships and sex. The programme provides information and life-skills around issues including puberty, growing up, relationships, dating, sexuality, pregnancy prevention, gender rights, alcohol use and parent-to-adolescent communications. The programme covers both the biological aspects of sex, and broader relational aspects such as peer and romantic relationships, love, reproduction, gender rights, HIV, risk-taking and peer influence. …

  3. Men: key partners in reproductive health. A report on the First Conference of French-Speaking African Countries on Men's Participation in Reproductive Health

    In Africa, men play key roles in reproductive health - as individuals, family members, community decision-makers, and national leaders. Most reproductive health care, however, focuses on women. Reaching men is key to making family planning more widely used, ensuring safe motherhood, and limiting the spread of HIV/AIDS. The conference focused on reaching men by overcoming barriers to men's participation and building on decisionmaking traditions in the region.

    Soul City, a multi-media health project in South Africa has been effective in imparting much needed information on health and development, and in changing attitudes and behaviour as well. Soul City works primarily within South Africa but the TV programme has been shown in a number of African countries as well. In the last two years Soul City has worked on a sponsored education booklet called Choose Life, aimed at 12-16 year olds in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. 1,331,000 copies of the booklet will be printed and distributed in the four countries in seven different languages. …

  6. The impact of HIV/AIDS on schooling in Zambia

    Zambia is currently experiencing one of the worst HIV/AIDS epidemics in the world, one result being that between one-third and one-quarter of the children aged below 15 have lost one or both parents. The high rate of orphanhood and the demographic, economic and social effects of HIV/AIDS work synergistically to affect education in various ways. Demand is reduced. Supply and the resource base are jeopardised. A large section of the potential clientele for schooling is forced into activities that are not compatible with regular school attendance. …

    The Sex Education Forum is a unique collaboration of diverse organisations representing children, parents, faith, disability, health and education. We believe thatáall children and young people are entitled to high quality sex and relationships education (SRE), which includes learning about HIV and AIDS. The House of Lords began an ad-hoc Select Committee on HIV and AIDS in the United Kingdom in January 2011 and is due to report in July 2011. One of the things the committee is investigating is whether education about HIV and AIDS is adequate and how to improve it. …

    In 2008, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights as well as related issues in the context of HIV and human rights were identified as key advocacy issues for the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa (ARASA).     SAYWHAT hosted its third edition of the female Students conference at Belvedere Technical Teachers' College from the 6th to the 8th of August 2009 under the theme "Strengthening Capacity and Networks on Reproductive Health Rights". 91 female students from 35 tertiary institutions participated and managed to dialogue with female programmers from PSI, SAfAIDS, Action AID, College authorities as well as an Honorable Deputy Minister among others. …

Each of the country offices commissioned the documentation of case studies to identify promising practices and challenges around effective implementation of NPAs.
