    • UNESCO's Sixtieth Anniversary

    UNESCO’s birth on 16 November 1945 was the outcome of reflection on the causes of the "great and terrible war which [had] just ended" and of a desire to remedy those causes by developing "the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind".

    Those concerns, and that ambition, are our legacy. They have been put to the test for six decades by the complexity of a world that has undergone deep-seated changes. They bear the marks of that experience, but remain as topical and relevant as ever.

    In commemorating its sixtieth anniversary, UNESCO endeavoured not so much to celebrate its accomplishments but to revive the power of the inspiration that guided its founding fathers. This means rekindling their sense of hope and vision with a view to the future.

    Sixty themes were selected to punctuate the sixty weeks between 5 September 2005 and 4 November 2006, anniversary of the coming into force of the International Convention constituting the UNESCO.

    Over the course of 60 weeks, UNESCO celebrated its 60th anniversary with hundreds of events all over the world. Some were grandiose, such as the commemorative ceremony of 16 November 2005.
