First official visit to China by UNESCO Director-General

Audrey Azoulay is to undertake her first official visit as Director-General of UNESCO to the People’s Republic of China from July 16 to 19. The visit will "celebrate China's commitment to multilateralism, and open a new era of cooperation between the country and UNESCO. 

The objective of the visit is to strengthen the strategic partnership between UNESCO and China for the period 2018-2021, with a view to implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Ms Azoulay’s historic visit will focus on three main areas: education, emphasizing Africa and the promotion of girls' education, culture, and the opportunities of new technologies. 

During her visit, the Director-General will visit Xi'An and the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the Terracotta Army, one of China’s many World Heritage sites. 

Ms Azoulay will also visit the Institute of Artificial Intelligence at Tsinghua University and take part in the inauguration of the Beijing International Center for Creativity and Sustainable Development alongside the city’s Mayor, Chen Jining. 

The official visit will also be an opportunity for Audrey Azoulay to meet representatives of the private sector who are among UNESCO's leading private partners.
