Terrorism has become one of the most complex and constant subjects of media reports in recent years, raising difficult ethical questions about professional standards of reporting, freedom of information and security.

How can journalists report on dramatic, emotionally charged scenes of violence without sensationalism, without playing into terrorists’ hate mongering and without reinforcing divisive stereotypes?

Media professionals, members of media regulatory bodies, researchers and representatives of victims’ associations will address these issues during a conference organized by UNESCO and 13onze15 – Fraternité Verité, a French nongovernmental organization that was created in the aftermath of the 2015 Paris terror attacks to support their victims.

Moez Chakchouk, Assistant UNESCO Director-General for Communication and Information, will open the conference (9.30 am), along with Philippe Duperron, President of 13onze15, and Colombe Brossel, Deputy Mayor of Paris in Charge of Security, Prevention and Integration.

The conference will include two roundtable discussions. The first, moderated by Jean-Paul Marthoz, author of UNESCO’s Handbook for Journalists on Terrorism and the Media, will examine how media coverage can promote security and respect for the victims of terrorism (10 am).

French journalist Nora Hamadi, will moderate the second debate (11.40 am) on media coverage that promote tolerance and social cohesion.
