Director-General condemns killing of camera operator Achyutananda Sahu in India

19 November 2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has denounced the violence that claimed the life of camera operator Achyutananda Sahu in the Indian state of Chattigsghar on 30 October.

“I condemn the killing of Achyutananda Sahu,” said the Director-General. “. A free press has a crucial part to play in the democratic process, notably in the run-up to elections and I trust the authorities will spare no effort to bring those responsible for the attack to trial.

“I also wish to extend my condolences to the loved ones of Mr Sahu and of the two police officers who died with him,” Ms Azoulay said.

Naxal rebels killed Achyutananda Sahu, a camera operator for public television broadcaster Doordashan, alongside two police officers in an ambush in a forest. Sahu had been sent to the area ahead of state assembly elections.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
