Training-workshop on intangible cultural heritage in Mangystau

National experts from Mangystau oblast took part in the UNESCO training-workshop “International mechanisms for implementation of the UNESCO Convention on Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)” that was held in Aktau, Kazakhstan on 27-29 September 2016 in the framework of the UN/Kazakhstan Joint Programme “Expanding the opportunities of the Mangystau region in achieving sustainable development and socio-economic modernization” for 2014-2016.The training-workshop was organized by UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office and the Kazakhstan National Committee for Safeguarding of ICH with support of the Cultural Department of the Mangystau oblast Administration.

The training aimed to:
- improve the understanding and use of practical mechanisms for implementing the 2003 UNESCO Convention on local level;
- identify the ICH elements from Mangystau oblast that have local specificities;
- prepare the files of those ICH elements for further inclusion into the national preliminary ICH list of Kazakhstan.

The training brought together officials from the Cultural Department of Mangystau Oblast Akimat, the “Otpan” State municipal government enterprise (under Cultural Department), members of the rural Cultural Houses and Clubs and experts from the Mangystau State Historical and Cultural Reserve. It should be noted that the participants of the training represented all of the five rayons of Mangystau oblast. Mr. Illia Fetysov, Certified UNESCO trainer for implementation of the 2003 Convention for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage conducted the training.

UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office plans to conduct the next training-workshop on implementation of 2003 Convention in November 2016 in Aktau, Mangystau oblast of Kazakhstan.
