About the project:

The project aims to establish a community-led audiovisual micro-industry on the Indonesian island of Siberut. In collaboration with the local government, a creative workshop space will be set up within the existing local Intercultural Media Centre, as a platform for training young creative professionals from indigenous communities in filmmaking and business management. This initiative will also provide the opportunity for young participants to develop their business ideas and create their own micro-enterprises.

Perkumpulan Hijau Siberut (PASIH) is a non-governmental organization established in 2007 by the people of Siberut Island. It is committed to the promotion of sustainable development through creative audiovisual communication and the provision of training opportunities for those working in the culture sector. PASIH is currently leading a number of cultural projects that address the priorities and specific socioeconomic needs of Siberut communities.

Key targets:

  • The potential of the island to develop a new cultural industry is assessed to identify the needs and potentialities of the region and devise approaches to develop an audiovisual industry in the island.
  • A ‘creative workshop space’ and an office are established in the premises of the IMC to carry out capacity building activities in collaboration with the local government.
  • The capacities of a group of young creative indigenous men and women to develop their new business ideas and create their own micro-enterprises are strengthened.
  • Local films and audiovisual productions by young creative entrepreneurs from Siberut are promoted and commercialized in the provincial and national markets.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?
Short Description:
  • Contributes to the creation of a new cultural industry: since cultural industries are not widely developed on Siberut, the support and strengthening of the capacities of young cultural professionals has the potential to develop an audiovisual industry in this Indonesian island.
