Instituts de catégorie 1
Les instituts de Catégorie 1 font partie intégrante de l'UNESCO. Les instituts de Catégorie 1 ont pour mission de renforcer les capacités scientifiques dans les États membres, essentiellement dans les pays en développement.
- Centre international de physique théorique Abdus Salam (CIPT)
Trieste, ItalieLe CIPT est un moteur des efforts mondiaux visant à faire progresser l'expertise scientifique dans le monde en développement. Bien que fonctionnant avec une grande autonomie, les programmes de cet instituts font partie du programme du Secteur des sciences exactes et naturelles de l’UNESCO. Le CIPT accueille l'Académie mondiale des sciences pour l'avancement de la science dans les pays en développement (TWAS), un programme de l'UNESCO qui soutient la prospérité durable par la recherche, l'éducation, la politique et la diplomatie.
- Institut de statistique de l'UNESCO (ISU)
Montréal, CanadaDans le cadre de son mandat, l'Institut de statistique de l'UNESCO (ISU) rassemble et dissémine des statistiques scientifiques à travers le Système des Nations Unies en collectant des données de plus de 200 pays et territoires grâce à son enquête biennale et ses partenariats avec des organisations clés. Les statistiques liées à la science sont utilisées en particulier pour compiler le Rapport sur la science de l’UNESCO.
Centres et instituts de categorie 2
Les centres et instituts de catégorie 2 contribuent à l'exécution du programme de l'UNESCO par le renforcement des capacités, l'échange d'informations dans une discipline particulière, la recherche théorique et expérimentale, et la formation avancée dans des domaines de compétence spécifiques. Ils sont sous l'égide de l'UNESCO, mais ne font pas partie de l'Organisation sur le plan juridique ; ils sont régis par leurs propres règles officiellement approuvées par la Conférence générale. Ces centres et instituts forment un vaste réseau de centres associés dans les domaines de l'eau, des énergies renouvelables, de la politique scientifique, de la biotechnologie, des géosciences, des sciences fondamentales et de la télédétection.
