Wed, 06/15/2016

On 15 June, Mayor of Montréal, Denis Coderre and Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, met bilaterally giving them the opportunity to exchange on the role of Montreal within UNESCO, and the Creative Cities Network in particular. Montréal celebrates the 10th anniversary of its designation as a Creative City of Design. Its steadfast commitment to the Network made Montréal a key member.

Be a UNESCO City of Design is about recognizing the strategic importance of designers and give them the opportunity to fully contributing to the city’s future. This international recognition represents a powerful lever to foster our efforts to improve the quality of life of Montréalers, and this, within all the sectors of activity” declared Denis Coderre.

UNESCO congratulates the commitments undertaken by Montréal, one of the firsts cities to join the Creative Cities Network in the field of Design, to make creativity an essential lever of sustainable urban development. For ten years, it has opened paths in the field with many initiatives deserved to be shared, such as its recent Membership Monitoring Report” highlighted Irina Bokova.

Indeed, Montréal has submitted in early 2016 its Membership Monitoring Report whose high-quality confirmed Montréal’s role as pivotal in the Network and to place creativity at the core of sustainable urban development.
