International seminar “Significant experiences behind the challenge of teaching about the Holocaust and the history of Genocide in the 21st century”

The two-day sub-regional seminar will gather education stakeholders from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay to discuss educational practices and current teaching challenges on education about the Holocaust, genocides of the 20th century and, more generally education about difficult memories and how it can contribute to promote human rights. In addition to fostering exchange of experience and promoting new pedagogies in the field, the meeting will also serve to raise awareness about the importance of Holocaust and genocide education to national and regional public and civil society organizations.

Organized in partnership with the Anne Frank Centre in Argentina, the seminar was developed as part of Argentina's commitment to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), and is a joint effort between the State, civil society and international organizations. It also results from Argentina’s activities within the UNESCO Latin American Network for Education on the Holocaust and Other Genocides, supported by the Regional Education Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago).

The UNESCO Latin American Network for Education on the Holocaust and Other Genocides will meet prior to the seminar and gather senior representatives of ministries of education from  Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Paraguay and Uruguay. as well as international experts from the Holocaust Museum of Guatemala, Facing History and Ourselves, the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
