The third IPDCtalks, looks at ‘Good Laws and practices for open societies: Powering sustainable development with access to information’. The event will be held in Tunisia on 27 September and web-streamed live around the world from 9.30am to 6.00pm (GMT+1).
Prominent speakers include 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkol Karman, former Minister of Tourism of Tunisia Amel Karboul and Director of DATA-POP Alliance Emmanuel Letouzé. There interventions will focus on how access to information is important to the Global Goals (Sustainable Development Goals). Media professionals, journalists and activists will also reflect on key elements to foster public access to quality information at both the global and local level including data protection, anti-corruption, transparency and accountability. Speakers include, Secretary General of Reporters Without Borders Christophe Deloire, 2017 European Press Prize winner for Innovation Chistiaan Triebert and Aniruddha Bahal, founder of Cobrapost.com.
This is the third year that UNESCO has held the IPCDtalks to mark the International Day for Universal Access to Information, which falls every year on 28 September. It will be the first time that the global event will be held outside of UNESCO’s Paris Headquarters. There are also eight regional events being held around the world in Afghanistan, Colombia, Gambia, Jordan, Malaysia, Namibia, Pakistan and Palestine.
Inspired by TEDxTalks, the IPDCtalks takes its name from the UNESCO Programme that organizes it - the International Programme for the Development of Communication, the IPDC. IPDCtalks aims to create a worldwide discussion on how to foster open societies and inspire better laws and practices in the field of access to information. Government and community leaders, journalists, NGOs and digital pioneers from around the world are invited to the IPDCtalks to share their achievements and initiatives with an audience of local and global stakeholders.
