Training the European judiciary and law enforcement officials on the fight against the illicit trafficking in cultural property

The joint UNESCO / European Union (EU) initiative “Training the European judiciary and law enforcement officials on the fight against the illicit trafficking in cultural property” aims at reducing the illicit trafficking of cultural property with a particular focus on objects originating from countries in a conflict situation or affected by a natural disaster by providing the training on international law-enforcement cooperation, extradition, and mutual legal assistance procedures and tools.

The specific objectives of this initiative are:

  • To raise the awareness of the European judiciary and law enforcement system regarding the illicit trafficking in cultural property, its link with other types of organized crime and as well as on the existing legal frameworks to combat it;
  • To provide technical assistance to beneficiaries;
  • To strengthen cooperation among European judiciary and law enforcement officials and exchange of good practices

The project includes two major activities: producing a training manual in hard copy and through e-learning modules and organizing a three-day capacity-building training.

The capacity-building training on 26-28 November 2018 at UNESCO Headquarters aims at providing the judiciary and law enforcement representatives from EU Member States with international expertise from UNESCO institutional partners. This will also be the opportunity for them to share their experiences and best practices.

A manual training and its interactive content will be promoted “in test mode” during the workshop. It will enable the audience to get familiar with the legal framework and existing documents (on international and EU level), to learn about practical tools and to work on real-life situations.
