UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD

The UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) honours outstanding projects by individuals, institutions and organizations related to ESD.

LAUREATES 2017

UNESCO revealed the three winners of the 2017 UNESCO-Japan Prize on ESD on 21 September 2017: Zikra for Popular Learning from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; the Hard Rain Project from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; and Sihlengeni Primary School from the Republic of Zimbabwe. Each of them will receive an award of USD 50,000, generously funded by the Government of Japan.

This is the third edition of the Prize, which showcases and rewards outstanding ESD projects and programmes in the framework of the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD.

The 2017 winners, chosen by UNESCO’s Director-General based on recommendations from an independent jury comprised of five international ESD experts, are a school, a business and a non-profit organization of, respectively, local, regional and global scope.

The Director-General and the Japanese Minister of Education will award the Prize to the three laureates in a ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 3 November 2017, during the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference.
