Multi-Stakeholder Consultation and Workshop on Sustainable Development Goals and Human Rights in Indonesia

The Multi-Stakeholder Consultation and Workshop will bring together representatives of UN agencies, the national government and civil society to identify critical linkages between SDGs and Human Rights in Indonesia, using innovative tools developed by the UNESCO Jakarta Office and its partners.

The 2030 Agenda puts international human rights at its core. Its universally applicable 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are designed to “leave no one behind” in pursuit of development. The SDGs open up new avenues to integrate human rights into global and national policies in both developed and developing countries over the next 15 years.

The SDGs and Human Rights are linked in a mutually reinforcing fashion. On the one hand, human rights provide insight and guidance for tackling the complex and multidimensional goals of the 2030 Agenda. On the other hand, the SDGs can serve as a tangible, results-oriented instrument for the realization of human rights.

Indonesia – the world’s fourth most populous country and third largest democracy – has taken important steps to turn the SDGs into reality by elaborating a set of national indicators reflecting the domestic developmental priorities. These priorities focus on eliminating poverty, reducing inequality, and promoting peace, justice, strong institutions and climate action. As such, they have direct relevance to the human rights obligations of the country based on domestic laws and international treaties.

With funding from UNDG, UNESCO Jakarta Office developed an Analytical Framework for monitoring the progress towards SDGs from the human rights perspective. This web-based tool will be available for use through the website of Komnas HAM – the foremost national human rights institution in Indonesia. The Multi-Stakeholder Consultation and Workshop will launch this Analytical Framework on Human Rights and SDGs for future use for monitoring and advocacy purposes.

The two day event will also aim to achieve the following objectives:
• Identify the linkages between SDGs and Human Rights in Indonesia by focusing on key cross-cutting human rights considerations in 2030 agenda.
• Identify the gaps in the national SDG framework from human rights perspective and reflect on ways to close them.
• Agree on the shared vision for using the national SDG framework for promoting human rights in Indonesia.
The event is open for participation to civil society.
