Global Steering Committee Meeting of the International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UNESCO, through its International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities – ICCAR is organizing together with the City of Nancy and the European Coalition of Cities against Racism, a meeting of the ICCAR Global Steering Committee on 10 December 2018.

The meeting aims to highlight the achievements and lessons learned since the adoption of the Bologna Declaration, as well as to chart a way forward for a strengthened proactive global platform.

The City’s celebration also includes a series of events: a meeting with the City of Nancy’s youth city council; the opening of the exhibition dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the “Ligue des droits de l’Homme” with original paintings by the painter Elpuentea, and finally, a second round table which is open to the public on "The application of human rights at the city level".

The establishment of the ICCAR Global Steering Committee (GSC) in April 2016 had made a breakthrough, promoting collaborative action and advocacy across the ICCAR platform, and enhancing its visibility. In this meeting, Coalition representatives reaffirmed their commitment to ICCAR by adopting the Bologna Declaration in which members committed to a culture of human rights and gender equality, where the rights of migrants and refugees are protected and upheld.

The recognition of ICCAR has increased as a global reference for city-to-city cooperation in the pursuit of inclusion and diversity in the urban space. In the recent celebration of World Cities Day at UNESCO Headquarters on 31 October 2018, the importance of creating human and inclusive societies, mobilizing city networks such as ICCAR, was highlighted by participating mayors, town councilors, urban stakeholders and artists.
