El Salvador/Guatemala/Honduras

This new biosphere reserve is the first tri-national biosphere reserve in Central America and it represents the major contribution to the implementation of the Mesoamerican Corridor.   It represents an important area of water catchment shared by the three countries and the biosphere reserve provide them a framework for cooperation and for establish a common management plan ensure a joint sustainable development of this region. It includes key biodiversity areas, like Montecristo National Park and different forest ecosystems. An important function of this mountain area is to guarantee water supply for the communities. It has also an important value for developing this region by the promotion of the coffee activities, conifer forest extraction or agro-tourism.   This biosphere reserve has a strong support of high political level (vis-ministers of the three countries) as well as the implication of local communities to promote sustainable development.
