In Palestine, 39 teachers, 24 from the West Bank and 15 from Gaza, completed a 10-day training on the use of mobile apps development. The intensive training took place from 11 to 30 August 2018 in West Bank and from 14 August to 3 September 2018 in Gaza.

This training is part of the activity of “empowering youth with innovative digital and entrepreneurial skills for jobs in a digital economy”, initiated and implemented by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, under the framework of the UNESCO-WeiDong Group Funds-in-Trust project on leveraging ICT to achieve Education 2030.

The training of teachers focused on the use of one of most recent and popular mobile apps programmes “Android Studio-Kotlin”. It was structured into eight training sessions with 60 hours of instruction covering the essentials of Kotlin.

Representatives including Mr Jehad Dradid, Director General of the ICT Department, Dr. Amjad Shehadeh, coordinator of the project from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), Mr Tap Raj Pant, Head of Education Unit, Ms Sonia Ezam, Senior Programme Officer from UNESCO Ramallah Office, and other colleagues opened the training of teachers and provided overall guidance and direction.

Supported by UNESCO, it was a pioneering experience for the MoEHE to organize such training on mobile apps development for teachers in Palestine. All the trained teachers have received a certificate after successful completion of the training course. With substantial knowledge, skills and hands-on experience gained from the training, the teachers are capable to contribute to the training of students within their respective school communities.

Capitalizing on the achievements yielded from the training of teachers, the MoEHE and UNESCO are ready to embark on the journey of training 675 students selected from Grade 8 to Grade 12. A launch event will be held on 26 November 2018, with the presence of the Minister of Education and Higher Education of Palestine.

Furthermore, in the presence of all the Directorates, the MoEHE has announced the start of the preparation for the Palestine Exhibition of Mobile Apps, which will showcase the mobile apps developed by the trained students and convene stakeholders to discuss on upscaling the training. Representatives of all Directorates confirmed their commitment and stressed the importance of empowering youth to gain digital and entrepreneurial skills.

The UNESCO-Weidong Group Funds-in-Trust project on leveraging ICT to achieve Education 2030 is a global project launched in 2015 to help Member States harness the potentials of ICT for the provision of inclusive, equitable and quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030.
