Kaunas, a UNESCO Creative City of Design, has opened a unique square, named George Maciunas, located in the middle of the tripartite junction connecting Vytauto Avenue, K. Donelaicio Street and Parodos Street. Named after one of the pioneers of the Fluxus movement, the square is the world’s first non-accessible square totally invisible to pedestrians, and corresponds to the spirit of Fluxian absurdity. 

The initiative is part of “Kaunas Highlights”, a contest of ideas having no analogues in Lithuania and launched by the municipality, which invites artists to submit new ideas in line with four main areas: sculptures, design objects, works of fine art and light installation. Participants can rethink any place in Kaunas with their works keeping uniqueness, originality and overall harmony with the urban environment as important criteria. Winners could be awarded a grant up to 100 percent for the implementation of the project.
