Japan, 1 November – Among the 44 applicants from around Japan, 5 areas, including Tsuruoka, Creative City of Gastronomy, were awarded the “Savor Japan” Certification, an initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to attract and raise awareness worldwide tourists to Japanese farming, mountain and fishing villages.

This certification is intended to increase the inflows of people, mostly visitors from abroad, into such villages through Japanese food and gastronomical experiences by reinforcing local brands, while aiming to increase the local economy by revitalizing these villages and thus promoting the export of locally produced items.

In this framework, Tsuruoka City will foster cooperation with other Creative Cities of Gastronomy, as well as domestic and international institutions for educational studies related to the Japanese cuisine, to offer learning opportunities in local gastronomy, targeting not only tourists but also academic researchers, by means of international conferences, gastronomical field study tours to areas producing indigenous crops. As the next steps, the city will proceed with organizing gastronomical experience programmes and coordinating partnerships with farmers hosting and immerging participants in the farming, forestry and fishery experiences in Tsuruoka.
