Learning to live together

Under Learning to Live Together (LTLT), UNESCO Dakar addresses the unresolved social, political, economic and environmental challenges that impede the building of peaceful and sustainable societies. The Office will support development of policies and programmes that promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and bring them into the mainstream of education policy and practice at all learning settings (formal, non-formal and informal) through research, policy dialogue, policy advice, teacher training, policy and curricular review and development.

ED’s work will be in convergence with the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD, addressing such themes as human rights, climate change, sustainable livelihoods, and responsible and engaged citizenship. It will require increased involvement of the civil society, research institutions, the private sector and the media. Additional resources will be mobilized to develop tools and carry out capacity building activities.

ED will review national policies and curricula (as well as their implementation status), and compile and disseminate experiences and good practices on ESD and GCED within and between countries to promote the teaching and learning of the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that are needed to build peaceful, healthy and sustainable societies.

ED will also assess the capacity needs of the policymakers and curriculum developers as well as relevant educational stakeholders to integrate the concept of ESD and GCED into policies and practice.

Support will be provided in collaboration with partner organizations for GAP implementation, including linking with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and monitoring of SDG Target 4.7.

Global Citizenship Education

Global Citizenship Education (GCED) aims to empower learners to assume active roles to face and resolve global challenges and to become proactive contributors to a more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive and secure world. GCED is for learners of all ages – children, young people and adults alike. It is one of the strategic areas of UNESCO’s Education Sector programme for the period 2014-2021.

Education for Sustainable Development

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) empowers learners to take informed decisions and responsible actions for environmental integrity, economic viability and a just society, for present and future generations, while respecting cultural diversity. It is about lifelong learning, and is an integral part of quality education. ESD is holistic and transformational education which addresses learning content and outcomes, pedagogy and the learning environment. It achieves its purpose by transforming society. UNESCO, as lead agency for ESD, coordinates the implementation of the Global Action Programme on ESD, as official follow-up to the UN Decade of ESD (2005-2014).
