Ensuring sustainable access to safe, clean water for all is fundamental in supporting human development under fair and equitable conditions in South-East Europe and the Mediterranean, and to enable Member States from the region to achieve not only SDG 6 on water but indeed all of Agenda 2030. In addition, climate change and other global changes are increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme events, which affect disproportionally the most vulnerable parts of the population.

Within the context of Agenda 2030, there is an urgency in the region to ensure equitable access to water and better promote resilience to extreme events.

The UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, in cooperation with WWAP and other partners, is organizing a high-level regional symposium following the launch of the 2019 World Water Development Report (WWDR) ‘Leaving No One Behind’ to examine how UNESCO and its partners can best work towards ensuring water equity in the region.
