IIEP-UNESCO

A delegation from IIEP-UNESCO is looking forward to attend the annual conference of the Comparative & International Education Society (CIES) in San Francisco from 14-18 April 2019. This year’s theme is Education for Sustainability.

IIEP has organized several panels on teachers of refugees with a focus on Ethiopia and Jordan, how to make better use of learning assessment data in policy-making, findings from global research on the use of open school data, and a new MOOC on planning for early childhood education.

IIEP’s Director, Suzanne Grant Lewis, will also participate in the Keynote Lecture that will inaugurate the week of conference activities. She will participate in a panel on the work of UNESCO in the Era of Sustainable Development Goals. Held in the historical Herbst Theater, the site of the United Nations Charter signing in 1945, it will be followed by a keynote address by Jeffrey Sachs.

Heading to CIES 2019 in San Francisco? We look forward to welcoming you to our panels throughout the week. Please see below for details, as well as in the CIES programme.

About this year’s conference theme

'During its “Development Decade” of the 1960s, the UN advocated education as a driver of economic growth. But, over the past fifty years, questions have been asked with increasing urgency about what kind of development is promulgated through literacy, skills training, and formal schooling. What is the longer term cost of an education that promises – and sometimes delivers – productivity, industrialization, modernity and consumption? Who pays this price? What are the larger costs? And with what ultimate consequence for the planet?'  (CIES 2019)
