UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay today denounced the killing of journalist and presenter Jesus Eugenio Ramos in Tabasco, southern Mexico on 9 February, calling for an end to impunity for attacks against the media.
“I condemn the murder of Jesus Eugenio Ramos,” said the Director-General, “I trust that the investigation underway will allow for the prosecution of those responsible for this crime. Impunity for attacks on media workers constitutes a tacit endorsement of crimes that undermine both freedom of information and the fundamental human right to freedom of expression.”
Jesus Eugenio Ramos, a veteran journalist who presented a daily news programme on local Oye 99.FM radio, was shot near the premises of the broadcaster.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
