10th Meeting on Management of Historic Centres: "Economic Sustainability of the Historic Centre, a Shared Responsibility"

The Office of the Historian of Havana, the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean and the Latin American and Caribbean Unit of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre are organizing the 10th Encounter on Management of Historic Centres, from 15 to 18 May 2012 as part of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the World Heritage Convention and the 30th anniversary of the inscription of Old Havana and its system of fortifications in the World Heritage List.

The event, which will be held in Old Havana, a World Heritage site since 1982, will have as central topic "The Economic Sustainability of Historic Centres as a Shared Responsibility" and is especially important because of the focus on cultural industries and the contribution of historic centres to sustainable development. The closing plenary session will discuss the results and recommendations of the workshops.

A pre-conference course will approach the following topics: urban management and heritage management; the work of the Master Plan implemented by the Office of the Historian of Havana; and unique aspects of the Management Model implemented by the Office of the Historian.

This conference highlights again the ongoing cooperation between the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture and the Office of the Historian of Havana, as the Encounter on Management of Historic Centres has received the support of the UNESCO Havana Office since it was held for the first time in 1995.
