This handbook for students is the last in a series of three documents designed for educational planners, teachers and students on school health education and the prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. It includes some fifty-three student learning activities on prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. The activities are divided into four units: 1) basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS and STDs; 2) abstinence and postponement of first sexual contact; 3) practicing safer sex; and 4) counselling and support.

This report of the UNESCO Regional Seminar on HIV/AIDS and Education within the School System for English-speaking Countries in Eastern and Southern Africa is intended for planners and policy-makers in Ministries of Education and Ministries of Health as well as representatives of NGOs. The particular focus is on Eastern and Southern Africa. The purpose of the Seminar was to enhance awareness of the need for preventive education on HIV/AIDS and to mobilise support for effective preventive education as means to reduce actual and potential impact of HIV/AIDS on education systems.
