  2. Intervention Strategies that Work for Youth: Summary of FOCUS on Young Adults - End of program Report

    This paper reports on programs that have helped young people in developing countries practise healthier behaviours, including delaying sexual debut, reducing the number of sexual partners, and increasing the use of methods of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS. It is addressed to program planners, administrators, policymakers, and donors interested in developing evidence-based strategies and programs to promote better health for youth.

  3. Impact of sex and HIV education programs on sexual behaviors of youth in developing and developed countries

    Sex and HIV education programs that are based on a written curriculum and that are implemented among groups of youth in school, clinic, or community settings are a promising type of intervention to reduce adolescent sexual risk behaviors. This paper summarizes a review of 83 evaluations of such programs in developing and developed countries. The programs typically focused on pregnancy or HIV/STI prevention behaviors, not on broader issues of sexuality such as developmental stages, gender roles, or romantic relationships. …

  4. HIV/AIDS in health, education and participation: an action space for youth involvement in the SADC Region

    In the SADC region, the HIV/AIDS rate is one of the fastest growing. This is especially true in the case of young adults and adolescent children. It is important to begin indoctrinating these children with comprehensive health skills and stronger self esteem to protect themselves. Mitchell presents strategies for both formal and nonformal education to reform education systems to begin preparing youth to assume the physical responsibilities to prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS. Youth needs to be targeted to become the voice to speak to their peers and change the course of this epidemic.

  5. HIV/AIDS and sex education among the youth in Zambia: towards behavioural change

    This article addresses how sex education in Zambia has changed over the course of time, particularly due to the spread of HIV/AIDS. The article is based on fieldwork conducted by the author in Zambia during six periodsbetween 1992 and 2003, and additional literature on HIV/AIDS education. The research conducted by the author between 1992 and 2001 focused primarily on female initiation rites, while that of 2002-2003 focused on the knowledge of HIV/AIDS among Zambian youth and how the knowledge is passed on by teachers at primary schools, but also by health workers, peer educators, and parents. …

    This paper describes findings from a recent UNAIDS-funded study of how education systems in selected countries in East Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific are responding to HIV/AIDS-related education. Data were collected by means of postal questionnaire and key informant interviews in Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam.Sources of information varied but included ministries, non-governmental organisations and other interested bodies. …

  7. HIV and AIDS myth buster

    "Engaging Young People to Prevent the Spread of HIV" is a pilot project implemented by the NGO SPACE (Society for People's Awareness, Care and Empowerment) and supported by UNESCO, New Delhi. This project is currently operational in 10 colleges of Delhi University and aims to enhance knowledge and skills of young people so that they are empowered to respond effectively to the challenges posed by HIV and AIDS.     In 2004, the University of Pretoria was contracted by the United Nations' Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Limpopo Department of Education (LDoE) to conduct research in Limpopo, South Africa, examining issues related to safety and threats for learners at the foundational (Grade R-3), intermediate (Grade 4-7) and senior (Grade 8-12) phases.     HIV infection rates among young Kenyan women outnumber those of young men by nearly six to one.
